Artist Statement

Influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, particularly work of Jackson Pollock and the action painters, my works tends to be visceral. Intuitive thoughts that deal with crude and elemental emotions create the identities of the paintings. Although images appear within my work, my focus remains on the paint application. They are non objective pieces though images may appear to the viewer, to could be an apparent product of my subconscious experience. The intentions of my work are for the paintings to assume their own identity. As human beings we are quick to associate a subject that is unfamiliar to us to a subject that exists within our own lives. My work is having the viewer from all types of lifestyles view the work as new information. Whether, they accept it or reject it, the objective is to have them view it as it is. Assembled on canvas, masonite and foam board using acrylic and mixed media paints achieves a variety of aesthetics my works. The paint on the surfaces is applied by brush, paint bottle or by hand to exert further control over the finished work. Because my work is a study of process and resolution my paintings depends on the formal elements. The use of different styles, techniques, materials and positions on the canvases becomes a record of the accidental overlay. Additionally, techniques like dripping and splattering make the work appear messy, yet they are controlled. Though the paintings stem from spontaneous ideas governed by physical aspects of the paint, they are controlled by my conscious actions. By using traditional processes such as painting on an easel or alternative methods such as painting the works while they are laying flat on the ground I achieve specific effects within the resulting painting. My work is inspired by artists Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, Leonardo Davinci and Robert Rauschenberg. All their works are extremely different from one another, but they all shared a common goal. They wanted to make the viewer think. Whether, it was Davinci who wanted the viewer to appreciate all aspects of life and its possibilities; or Rauschenberg, who wanted the viewer to take a moment and learn from another culture to lead to the achievement of world peace. All these artists want to viewer to really live life and not go through the motions of a routine life. The idea for my work is to have the viewer think outside of their routine lifestyle and to execute the actions it takes to experience their life.
